Corruption and Governance: what should companies and investors do?

This is first question asked by Paul. Paul I would not be answering you today completely but I would give you my own experience.

When I was doing my college, and mind you I am a very studious girl. I am totally a book worm. I loved books and science back then. Well, I am waiting for my results, I am expecting couple of calls from the universities that I have applied for my further studies. But to my surprise, my land line number got dead exact time of urgency. I had two choices to make:


1. I have to either call the government employee and complain him, and then fill the form he provides, and wait for 14 to 20 days for him to come and repair the dead phone. Being a government employee in India, what else can be expected. It's not an embellishment on the part of laziness of employees if I say we can expect more than 20 days to get my phone back to working stage.

2. Or I could call the same government employee and then give him 500 rupee note and ask him to repair. He would finish the same job instantaneously, it is so obvious.

So you tell me what would I have done at that time? Followed the government policy or encouraged corruption? And at what's the cost? It costed me or him?
